Overheard – I really wanted my middle name to be Thomas

MiddleNameOverheard.jpgFor a few months, I commuted to work twice a week on a bus, and this one was overheard on one such ride. Although this was the first “overheard” I wrote down, it took me a while to draw it. The young man who was speaking was talking to another man across the aisle, although the two did not appear to know each other otherwise. The disappointment of the young man with his mother seemed to revolve squarely around his middle name – no other example of her “failings” was presented.  Pen and watercolor pencil on paper by me.

  1. I love this combo and the non-human characters so human! When my sister was born, my parents couldn’t choose between 2 names so they asked me which I liked better (note: I was 3 years old). So I chose and that’s what they named her. I have thought since then what a big decision I made for her! I’ve never asked if she’d rather had the other name and I never will. This piece reminded me.

    1. Thank you, Claudia! I love naming stories – thank you for sharing! I agree with you that she shouldn’t know about the other name – the grass is always greener, as they say. Although, when my Mom told me some of the alternatives she had considered for me, I was grateful that my name won out (the others were a lot weirder).
